A life well lived is a precious gift. The life of Brenda Kay Griffin Matthews , age 70, of Sunset Drive was a gift each and every day to her family, to her friends and to each and every person that she touched throughout her life.
On Saturday, April 28, 2018 Brenda quietly and peacefully entered into the arms of Jesus and left this earthly home to be in a place of glorious beauty and peace forever.
Brenda was born October 20, 1947 in Haywood County and where she had made her home all of her life. There was never ever a more devoted daughter to her parents, the late Hershel and Willie Mae Reece Griffin, than Brenda. All of her life she made certain that her parents were cared for and she remained a pillar of strength for them until their passing.
During the month of September, 52 ½ years ago, she married the love of her life, Gary D. Matthews, and they have shared a wonderful life together. They were blessed with a beautiful daughter, Kendra, and a wonderful son, Kaine. Brenda devoted her life to her family and made a home that was constantly filled with love. She supported her children in every endeavor that they pursued, serving as class grade mother at North Canton Elementary School, being a Brownie Troop Leader, having front row seats at Judo and wrestling tournaments, baseball games, cheerleading events and football games and often inviting a mass of children and parents to their home for after-the-game fun and special refreshments. Brenda made every holiday a special occasion at the Matthews home and no one will ever forget the special “treat bags” filled with goodies and surprises that she made for everyone- not just family members but everyone who might stop by for a visit. Her thoughtfulness never ceased, sending birthday cards, special notes, making phone calls to check on her friends and always spreading a word of kindness. Brenda made friends wherever she went and the summers at Lake Chatuge at Ho Hum Campground were treasured happy memories for Brenda. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for many years and her friendships were an important part of her life. Brenda was employed for several years at Pisgah High School where she was a member of the cafeteria staff and during her tenure made certain that each and every student was given special attention. She was indeed a promoter of Black Bear Spirit all throughout the year, and all of the teachers and children adored Brenda.
A lady of strong faith, she was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she had attended since a young child. She was always involved in helping with Vacation Bible School and often prepared food for the bereavement committee. Brenda was a wonderful cook and her table was always filled with delicious homemade food –her desserts, especially her delicious pound cake, can never be matched. She and Gary made everyone feel welcome to their home. It was always a place of joy and laughter and a feeling of peace and love surrounded everyone who visited.
There are no words to express how valuable Brenda’s later employment with Crawford / Ray Funeral Home meant to Mike and Sherry Ray and also the late Mrs. Dorothy Crawford. Brenda was a devoted secretary and bookkeeper for 33 years but she was more – she was family. Her heart was filled with compassion each and every day and her devotion was endless.
Our hearts are broken to lose Brenda but wherever a beautiful soul has been there will always be a trail of treasured memories.

Matthews of Canton, her daughter, Kendra Thompson and her husband, Shane of Canton; her son, Kaine Matthews and his wife, Ashley of Franklin and her grandchildren, Dalton, Jackson, Christian and Kendal Grace; a sister, Nancy Payne of Canton; a special niece, Ivy Palmer of Telford, TN; her beloved and faithful friends, that are just like family, Terry and Gary Taylor of Canton; Mike and Sherry Ray who have been loved and blessed to feel like a part of the Matthews family and also their daughters, Melody and Maria Ray who loved Brenda like another Mother and who she has loved just like her own children ; Brenda’s special dog “Sadie” will also miss her deeply. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Krieble.
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, May 2, 2018 in the chapel of Crawford / Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service. Pastor Chris Willett, Pastor Jason Smith and Pastor Paul Murdock will be officiating. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Crawford / Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.
