Gary Edwin Ackerman, MD (Hannan Ben Sholomo) passed from this world on Sunday, June 16, 2019, Father’s Day, surrounded by his family at home in Dallas, Texas. He was born August 27, 1945, in Phoenix, Arizona, to Gertrude Cook and Sol Ackerman. After Gertrude’s passing in 1947, Sol married Sylvia Hordes, who raised Gary and his brothers Mark and David. After Sol passed away in 1953, they relocated to Jersey City, NJ, where the family was raised by Sylvia. Gary was the big brother, father figure, and persistent hard worker who went on to achieve amazing things in his life.

Gary graduated from Teaneck High School in 1963 and received a full scholarship to Columbia University in New York City. Gary graduated with highest honors from Columbia University in 1968 with a degree in pharmacy. He received his medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine and completed his residency at Maimonides Medical Center in obstetrics and gynecology in Brooklyn, NY. After medical school, he served two years active military duty in the US Army at Fort Belvoir, VA. His fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at UT Southwestern brought him to Dallas, Texas, where he served as a clinical professor and practiced medicine for over forty years, including serving as the founding director of the Women’s Intermediate Care Center at Parkland Hospital. Gary was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Reserves, which included an extended deployment to Germany during the first Gulf War. His many passions included cooking, season tickets at the Dallas Opera and Dallas Symphony, advocacy for victims of sexual assault, women’s reproductive health, travelling, and long-time membership at Congregation Beth Torah.

He married the love of his life, Ellen Saitz, in 1970 in Maplewood, NJ, and they were blessed with five children, Sara (deceased), Beth (Gerry Hoch), Joshua (Debra), Jennifer (Corey Helfand), and Benjamin. Gary was the proud Zayzay to 6 grandchildren: Noah, Ari, Eden, Matan, Jonah, and Eli. Of his many accomplishments, the greatest pride and joy came from his family. His bright spirit will continue to sparkle in the eyes of his beloved grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, and his daughter Sara Michelle. He is mourned by his loving circle of cousins, friends, colleagues, and his loyal dog, Layla.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at 12:00pm at Sparkman Hillcrest chapel, followed by graveside burial located at 7405 W Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX 75225. The family would like to thank the many members of Gary’s medical team for their devoted and skilled care through the duration of his illness.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to: Congregation Beth Torah, UT Southwestern Kidney Cancer Program or Victim Intervention Program at the Rape Crisis Center at Parkland Hospital.
