Freak Accident Proves Fatal To Benton Man
Harold E. Roberson Sr., 54, of Benton, was injured fatally about 12:15 p.m. Wednesday when a tread on a half-track vehicle broke and knocked him beneath it as the vehicle was being towed on the freeway at Sixth Street.
The State Police said that Roberson was steering the Army surplus half-track - a vehicle that has a truck body with wheels in front and treads in the rear - and was being towed by a truck driven by Howard Benbrook, 38, of Benton.
As the two vehicles approached the Sixth Street overpass, headed south, the left tread on the half-track broke and struck the driver's seat, knocking Roberson to the highway beneath the treads. He was dragged 34 feet before Benbrook could stop.
Roberson was taken to Arkansas Baptist Hospital where he died a short time later.
Roberson was Little Rock's third traffic fatality of the year. Raymond Carl Medlock Sr. of North Little Rock died Tuesday of injuries suffered during the weekend at Little Rock.
Because of the fatalities, black flags will be flown on Little Rock police cars for 24 hours. It will be the first time this has been done since the police decided last month to fly the flags to remind motorists of a traffic fatality.
Roberson was an employee of the Adams Feed Mill of Benton. He was a member of the Forest Hills Baptist Church at Benton.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Rachael Mangum Roberson; a son, H. E. Roberson Jr. of Benton; two daughters, Mrs. Maxine Brewer of Benton and Miss Carolyn Roberson of Texas; his father, A. M. Roberson of Little Rock; six brothers, Arnold, Russell and George Roberson of Little Rock, Wayne Roberson of California and Andrew and Arlie Roberson of Texas; and three sisters, Mrs. Edna Lequieu of Little Rock, Mrs. Mary Shipp of Indiana and Mrs. Irene Munson of Russellville.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Ashby Funeral Service of Benton. [from the Arkansas Gazette, Thursday, March 18, 1965, page 1B]
