Roe Jr., 95, of Roanoke, Va., "last solo flight, his flight plan being unknown, not knowing his destination, of those who preceded him or those to follow." He was predeceased by Mary S. and James M. Roe Sr.; and by brothers and sisters-in-law, John E. Roe (Mid) and Thomas W. Roe Sr. (Betty). Jim served in World War II as a jet fighter/multi-engine pilot in the CBI Theatre, 14th AF. Later he continued to serve in the 4th Fighter Group, serving in the United States and Alaska. During his time in service he flew the "Hump," was in a newsreel short about the Shooting Stars and performed in acrobatic aerial demonstrations. While in Alaska he crossed the Arctic Circle. He was discharged from active duty in 1950, retiring from the Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1982. He never lost his love for aviation. He graduated from Ohio State College of Law and moved to Roanoke with his family, working with State Farm as a claims manager. In 1962 Jim joined the law firm of Stuart Carter, in Fincastle, retiring from Roe & Roe, PLC after 40 years of practicing. During his career he was admitted to practice in both Ohio and Virginia, and before the U.S Supreme Court. He was member of the Botetourt and Roanoke Bar Associations, the Virginia Bar, the Virginia State Bar, the Roanoke City Personnel Board, and many other organizations. He was an excellent attorney, and truly enjoyed helping others. Jim loved life and people, and always had a smile for everyone. His sense of humor was well-known, always having a joke to tell, and he had a hearty laugh. Those who knew him say he was a kind man, and always a gentleman. During his life he was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling, traveling and taking photos. He was a member of the Roanoke Country Club, the Shenandoah Club, and the Order of Masons. He is remembered by his wife, Dottie; and his daughter, Cyndi and her partner, Ray. Other members of the family who remember him with love and respect are Bill, Karen, Dottie and their families. It's Father's Day, Dad, and we miss you.
