Derrick was born June 13, 1964 in Haywood County where he has resided most of his life. He was a member of the 1982 graduating class of Pisgah High School and continued his education at DeVry Institute of Technology in Atlanta , Georgia studying Computer Science and also Tabernacle Baptist College in Greenville, South Carolina majoring in Theology. Derrick had been employed at General Electric Corporation in Greenville, South Carolina. His passion for history and also his great interest in his family history and heritage were very important to Derrick. He was blessed with a wonderful personality and he loved to share many happy moments of laughter with family and his many friends. He was a dedicated University of North Carolina sports fan. Derrick held a strong faith in Christ and his life has touched many. He loved his family deeply and his son was truly his pride and joy. Derrick will forever be a part of our lives and in the words of his family, “Everyone loved Derrick.”
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kimberly Sue Duckett Shipman who passed away in 2004.
Surviving are his mother and father, Boyd and Helen Haney Shipman of Canton; his son, John Derrick Shipman, II of Asheville; a brother, Michael Kevin Shipman and his wife, Katharine Ann Shipman of Canton; nieces, Bethany Shipman and Hannah Hamilton and her husband, James Hamilton; a nephew, Caleb Shipman and many friends.
A celebration of life service for Derrick will be held at 6:00 pm Tuesday, January 22, 2018 at Crestview Baptist Church. Reverend Dr. Michael Shipman, Reverend Dr. Dan Page and Reverend Ned Webb will be officiating. The family will be receiving and friends at the church following the celebration of life service. A private interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery.
