James Clair Sheppard, Jr., 72, of Camden, died Friday, June 14, 2019 at North Kansas City Hospital.

James was born on March 8, 1947 in Kansas City, the son of James Clair and Bernice Nadine (Plaskett) Sheppard, Sr. He was united in marriage to Nieta L. Harrison of Richmond on October 6, 1973, she survives of the home.

Additional survivors include one daughter, Christi (David) Tackett of Rayville, three grandchildren: Brittany (Derrick) Sander, Christopher Tackett and Adrian (Nathan) Woods; 5 great grandchildren: Maddox, Kiley, Colten, Liam and Warren; two sisters: Bonnie (Jim) Roberts of Omaha, NE and Patricia (David) Holder of Durango, CO; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Frank Alrich Sheppard.

James grew up and was educated in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School in 1965. After high school, James proudly served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam, where he received a Purple Heart. James worked as a fuel truck driver for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 40 years and retired 2014. James was the past Commander for the Lexington VFW Post #4052 where he volunteered countless hours. James was also an Eagle Scout in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say Troop 317, his tribal name of Warrior Flashing Redlight. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, fishing, watching Nascar and attending sporting events.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Lexington VFW Post #4052. They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation followed by Memorial Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2019 with visitation from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. A Tribe of Mic-O-Say service will be held during visitation at 1:45 p.m. Graveside memorial services will follow visitation at 2:30 p.m. at Cravens Cemetery, near Camden. Full military honors will be presented by the United States Army and the Lexington VFW Post #4052.

The family invites you to join them at the Lexington VFW Post #4052 for a time of fellowship and refreshments following the graveside service.
