He graduated from Pine Village High School in 1939. He attended Purdue University and was in the marching band and a member of Delta Tau Delat Fraternity.
He joined the US Army in 1942. He was a military policeman and was active int he Army Band.
In 1944, he was sent to Europe with Headquarter Co., 1st Battalion, 423 Regiment, 106th Infantry Division. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge, near St. Vith Belgium, on December 19, 1944. He was in four different prison camps during the next six months.
On Christmas Eve, 1944, he prison camp was bombed by the Allies while the prisoners were locked in train cars. He and fellow prisoners were liberated by the Russian Army in May of 1945.
He completed his military service as a Military Policeman and was discharged in December, 1945.
He was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart.
He married Barbara Howarth in 1952.
