A resident of Hinesville for the past 48 years, he retired from the U.S. Army in March 1981 after 26 years of service and retired from Civil Service in 1997. He was a Vietnam veteran and the recipient of many military awards. He was stationed in Germany and held Top Secret Clearance while serving under the commanding General over the military post in Nuremburg, Germany as both his Classified Documents Custodian and Physical Security Specialist. He received a special award from the German Government after saving a 10-year-old boy from drowning. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and one sister. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Wood of Allenhurst; daughter, Juanita Griffin of Glennville; two grandsons, David Griffin (Crystal) of Reidsville and Jimmy Griffin (Kayla) of Tennessee; granddaughter, Becky Poole (Victor) of Swainsboro; great-granddaughters, Paisleigh Griffin and Macy Kersey of Reidsville; three sisters and two brothers - all of North Carolina.
