Obituary:
REASON WHITACRE
Oldest Resident in Bloom Township - Dead.
Leaves a large family and considerable property.
Reason Whitacre, the oldest resident of bloom Township, died Tuesday morning at his home a half mile east of Cygnet in the 86th year of his age. He came to the township in 1834 from Columbiana County where he was born in 1814. The funeral was held Thursday morning at Cygnet at the M. E. Church. Rev. FM Cook officiating. Besides his second wife, the following sons and daughters survive him: Mrs. H.C. Mercer, Samuel, Daniel and Thomas. Mrs. Whitacre died in 1861 and in 1866 Mr. Whitacre was married to Miss Mary Bullis. Four children were born to this union. Three of them are living: Herman, Arthur, and Warren. Reason Whitacre numbered his relatives by the score in Wood County, and was one of the best known residents in the County. In 1833 and 1834 he took up considerable land in the county and at the time of his death was still possessor of 300 or more acres in Bloom and other townships. Considerable of the land happened to be in rich oil producing territory and Mr. Whitacre realized a big income from oil royalties. He married his first wife, Mary McCrory, March 22, 1837, who was a native of Pennsylvania, but who came to Wood County with her father, Samuel McCrory in an early day. Reason Whitacre was full of interesting stories of the frontier life which he and his people led during the earlier days of Wood county.
