Born Meindert Christiaan van Essen, he later used the name Minard. He was born in Brandwijk, Zuid-Holland, Holland, the son of Kommer (Commer) van Essen and Christina Jacoba Tas.

After his mother's death in 1901 he immigrated to the United States with his father and two of his four brothers, Adrianus J. (Adrian Jacob) and Kommer (Commer). They sailed out of Rotterdam on April 13, 1907 aboard the SS Statendam, arriving in the port of New York on April 24. They passed through Ellis Island before making their way to their destination at 1046 Hall St. SE in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Information from his World War I Draft Registration card, dated June 4, 1917 indicates he was using the name Meindert Christiaan Van Essen at that time and was living at 1046 Hall St. SE in Grand Rapids. He was an Alien, but 1st papers had been taken out. He was single, and employed as a baker, working for his father. His physical description was tall and slender with blue eyes and red hair. He was then ill with chronic rheumatism.

At the time of the 1930 U.S. Census, taken in April of that year, he was still employed as a baker, working at a wholesale bakery. He was still single and living at the Hall St. SE adress with his brother Commer and their step-mother, Tjitske.

VAN ESSEN – Minard Van Essen, aged 86, formerly of 1046 Hall St. SE, passed away at the Osteopathic Hospital Tuesday morning. He is survived by several cousins. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM at the Garfield Park Cemetery Chapel. Rev. Harlan VandenEinde officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the DeVries Funeral Home, 1204 Eastern SE, Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM. A service by DeVries-Kuiper-DeGraaf.
