ANDREW PEACE ‘ANDY’ ‘AP’ COX was born in the summer of 1837 on the 3rd of August, in Whitley County, Kentucky. He was the fourth child born to Fleming Trigg Cox and Mary Ganevera Leigh.  The family migrated from Whitley County, Kentucky to Bell County, Texas around 1855 when he was about 18 years old.

In July 1860, Andy, 22, is listed as a student attending school, living in his father’s household in Belton, Bell, Texas.

He married Frances Marzella Hampton in Bell County, Texas, on the 17th of October in 1861. Andy was 24 and Fannie 18. Just two months later he joined the Confederate Army.

Andrew P. Cox joined for duty and enrolled on January 15, 1862 in Belton, Bell, Texas as a Private in Company E, Unit 17 of the Confederate Consolidated Dismounted Cavalry of Reg’t Texas Volunteers.

He served as a Private in Company D, Unit 18, Texas Cavalry from January 15 to June 30, 1862 and is listed on the muster roll dated March 15, 1862 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas at age 24. The 18th Texas Cavalry was also known as Darnell’s Cavalry Regiment which was organized in Dallas on March 15, 1862.

He mustered in May & June, 1863 as a Private in Company D, 18th Regiment Texas Cavalry. Remarks stated that he was not captured at the Arkansas Post.

A. P. Cox is listed on the muster roll as a Private in January and February 1864, in Company E, 17th Consolidated Texas Dismounted Cavalry.
Confederate forces surrendered to Union forces at Galveston, Texas, on June 2, 1865.

Andy returned home after the war and from 1866 to 1882, Andy and Fannie were blessed with ten children, Laura was born in 1866, Savanah in 1867, Paul in 1869, Mark in 1871, Ethel in 1872, Marvin in 1873, Albert in 1876, Eli in 1878, Fannye in 1881, and Allie Bess in 1882.

The August 4th, 1870 Census show the family living in Belton, Bell County, Texas. Laura is 4, Savannah is 3, and Paul is six months old.

Their son, Marvin, born May 24, 1873, was just a month old when tragedy struck the family. Paul, Mark, and Ethel died within days of each other in June of 1873 after eating poison berries. The children were buried beside one another in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Nolanville, Texas.

Another son, Eli, was born in February of 1878 and then Albert, in October 1878, in Nolanville, Texas.

By June of 1880, the family was living in Coryell County, Texas. Andy, now 42, Frances, 37, Laura, 14, Savannah, 13, Marvin, 7, Albert, 3, and Eli, 2. Their name is spelled ‘Cocks’ in the census record. Their daughter, Frances Marzella, was born in September later that year.

Allie Bess, their last child was born in February 1882 in King, Texas.

Their daughter, Savannah, was the first to marry. She married John Wesley Patterson on October 29, 1884, in Coryell County, Texas; however, their union together was short. Savannah died at the age of 20 on January 15th, 1887 during the birth of their 2nd child, Andy Baird Patterson. Their first child was Ola Enoch Patterson.

Andy’s wife, Fannie, died December 29th, 1887 at the age of 44, just months following the death of their daughter Savannah. Andy was left to raise their children, Marvin, 14, Albert, 11, Eli, 9, Fannye, 6, and Allie Bess who was just 5. Laura was 21 years old and probably helped her father with raising the younger children until he married again in 1890.

Andy married Emma Jane ‘EJ’ Anderson, widow of Thomas Y. Blackmon (1859-1889), on January 12, 1890. She had two children from her previous marriage as indicated in the 1900 census which listed their last name as ‘Cox’ instead of ‘Blackmon’.

Andy’s younger children, Eli, Fannye, and Allie Bess were living with his son, Albert C. Cox in June of 1900 in Evant, Coryell County, Texas.

Tradition states that Albert stopped by his father Andy’s home one afternoon to find his sisters, as he perceived, being treated unfairly. Albert gathered his sisters up and left word for his father that he took the girls to live with him. Albert took responsibility of raising and caring for his younger sisters and evidently at some point in time Eli moved in with Albert as reflected in the 1900 census.
