Musician. He will be remembered for his Top 10 hit "Right Place, Wrong Time" (1973). Born Malcolm John Rebennack, Jr., his father operated an appliance store. Young Malcolm came under the influence of local Jazz legends King Oliver and Louis Armstrong which led to him learning the piano. At the age of seventeen, he cut his first single "Storm Warning" (1959) under the Rex label which achieved success locally. Following a period of heavy drug usage which resulted in a stint in prison, he relocation to California where he made a name for himself as a sessions musician for such artists as "Sonny and Cher," Aretha Franklin and "The Rolling Stones." By the late 1960s, he developed a fascination with the practice of Voodoo from his New Orleans' roots and adopted the name "Doctor John." He secured a record contract with the Atco label and yielded his first album "Gris-Gris" (1968). His album "In The Right Place" (1973) included the hit "Right Place, Wrong Time" which reached number nine on the American Pop Charts. During the course of his career, he recorded more than two dozen albums and received six Grammy Awards. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. He died from a heart attack.
