James A Paxton, age 84 of Redmond, WA passed away from blood cancer on April 14, 2019 after experiencing the disease for 11 years. He was born May 21, 1934 in Mason City, Iowa to Wiffing H. Paxton and Esther (Sampson) Paxton. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1952 and Mason City Junior College in 1954.
Towards the end of the Korean War he served in the United States Army at Fort Sill as an Instructor in Artillery Flash Ranging prior to completing his professional Degree of Bachelor of Architecture in 1960 at Iowa State University. He loved his country and was a patriot, believing that we achieve Peace Through Strength.
He spent his teenage summers working for a contracting company, advertising department of the local newspaper, and draftsman in an architect's office. James also enjoyed building a wooden sailboat with his dad and became hooked on sailing thereafter. Throughout his childhood he enjoyed being at the family cottage all summer on the lake at Clear Lake, Iowa.
James Paxton became proprietor of James Paxton Architects and Planners in Des Moines, Iowa for 20 years. Professionally, he was a member of the American Institute of Architects and Charter Member of the Des Moines, Iowa Chapter of Construction Specifications Institute, including several other professional organizations.
James and his family moved from Des Moines, Iowa in 1986 to Seattle for the NW weather and water scenery. After working as an architect at several firms, he retired in 1999 as the city architect in Renton, Wa.
He was always busy with his hobbies of woodworking, restoring antiques, building furniture, enjoying water activities, fishing, hunting, reading, genealogy, travel, painting, and especially spending time with his family. He loved classical music and enjoyed attending his grandchildren's school music concerts.
James Paxton, as a devoted husband and father, is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary L. ( Gaffri ) Paxton and their three children and 8 grandchildren; daughter Anne Hammond (Bill) and their three children, William, John, and Cora of Olympia, WA. ; daughter Lynda Nielsen (Todd) and their two children, Ryan and Matthew of Issaquah, WA; and son Tyson Paxton (Anya) and their three children, Alexander, Anton, and Austen of Seattle, WA.
He is survived by one brother, Robert Paxton of Vancouver, WA; one sister, Barbara Try of Mesa, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews. He leaves behind many wonderful and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Janet Keenan.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 11th at 1 pm at the Bellevue Presbyterian Church located at 1717 Bellevue Way NE, Bellevue, WA.
