On June 9, 2019, Martha Ann Hussong peacefully passed away in Oklahoma City, OK – with her family at her bedside. Ann, as she was called by family and friends was born on February 13, 1943 to Martha Shearer Roniger and Pascal Roniger in Manhattan, Kansas.
In 1950 her family moved to the family farm on Diamond Creek in Chase County. There she was known as “wormy” as she was in constant motion. She channeled this energy into the sport of track and field, and was known as the “running girl from Emporia”, the town where she trained. Ann’s training lead her to the Track and Field Nationals where she excelled. During the years 1958 and 1959, she was the National champion for the Pantheon which consisted of five events – long jump, high jump, 80 meter hurdles, 220 meter dash, and shot put. Therefore, during those years Ann was the top female amateur athlete in the entire country. She did this when there was no female track team at her Centre High School, and her father made her starting blocks and the shot put.
Ann met Bill Hussong at the University of Hawaii and they were married in 1962 in Wilsey, Kansas. Together they had three children – William Allen Hussong (Austin, TX), Shawn David Hussong (Norman, OK), and Stephanie (Hussong) Valeo, (Alpharetta, GA).
Her focus for 25 years was as the health science teacher at a secondary school with a school population of 4600 students, where she was loved and known by all as Doctor Mom.
Upon retirement, Ann and Bill moved to Oklahoma, where she excelled as a professional organizer with a focus on hoarders. She was a true folk artist and crafter, from basket weaving to candle making, to her final love – rug hooking.
Ann was predeceased by her parents and leaves behind her husband, children, six beloved grandchildren, and brother and sister-in-law John and Mary Roniger. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends and all those she touched and helped on her journey.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2019, from 5:30 – 7:00 pm, at the Wilsey Christian Church. Graveside service will be at 11:00 am, Thursday, June 20th, at Diamond Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be to: Integris Foundation, 3030 NW Expressway #1600, OKC, OK 73112.
