- James Taylor Jenkins, the father of Dortha Ann Jenkins, was born July 30, 1846, near Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio. During the Civil War, James served as a Bugler in Company G of the 7th West Virginia Cavalry. He evidently enlisted at Charleston, West Virginia on March 31st, 1864.
- Jenkins and first wife Malissa Jane Gilliland were married in Jackson, Ohio by parson Athersen about January 1st 1871 and separated some two years later. Their son Willie Jenkins was born in 1872 and died at the age of one month. After James and Melissa separated, he became involved with Damaria Coldiron, who was born November 20, 1854. Their daughter, Dortha Ann Jenkins, known as "Dolly," was born on December 3, 1876 in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas. Their other children were: Nora J., born November 13, 1886 in Texas, and George J., born April 19, 1891 in Texas.
- Henry C. and Dortha (Jenkins) Potter took in the children after their mother's death August 11, 1895 in Hutchins, Texas. They are shown with them in the 1900 Census of Dallas County as Nora J., 14, and George J., age 9.
- James Taylor Jenkins married Sarah Magnolia Bull in 1901 in Dallas County. She was previously married to a man named Sullivan, who was lost in the Galveston flood. Jenkins moved in with Henry and Dortha in 1911. In 1915 he applied for a Civil War Pension.
- After an illness of ten months, James Taylor Jenkins died August 28, 1923 at the age of 76. His death occurred at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Potter, located at the Ferris Brick Yard near Mesquite. He was buried in Row 31 of the Pleasant Mound Public Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
