From The Davis County Clipper (Bountiful, UT) - Friday, September 6, 1901:
Stephen Parkin, son of William J. and Eliza Foulds Parkin of Bountiful, was injured in a Spring Valley coal mine about five miles from Piedmont, Wyoming, on Thursday, August 29, which two later resulted in his death. He was down the mine shoveling coal down a chute when a cave-in took place just ahead of where he was working. A large flat stone, about a ton in weight, dropped down six feet on the small of his back and crushed him to the ground. The stone slid off from his body. He did not think he was hurt very seriously. He called two men who were working in the mine near him who came and took him out of the mine. When they got him home he remarked to his wife that he was glad he was not hurt worse than he was and she had merely expressed her gratitude that matters were no worse then they were when he expired. It was about 6 p.m. when the end came.
He was a new hand down in the mine only having worked there about a month. He was weigh boss at the mine nearly a year before going down the mine to work. He and his companion in the mine had just broken down a lot of coat when the latter left the mine and told the deceased to do some timbering before removing any coal. He got the timbers ready, but thought he would finish shoveling in enough coal to make out a ton before stopping to timber. He waited a little too long.
His brothers, William J. and George went out the Spring Valley Friday evening. Short services were held at the Spring Valley ward Saturday evening and the same night they started to Bountiful with the body arriving at Wood Cross at 5:15 Sunday morning. Funeral services were held in the South Bountiful meeting house, Monday at 2 p.m.
Deceased would have been twenty-six years old on the 20th of October and was born in Bountiful. He filled a two year mission to Great Britain returning in June 1899. On the 6th day of June 1900 he married Lillian Bell of Alma. They are parents of a three-month old baby.
