Timothy John Whalen, age 82 of Charleston, died Saturday morning, June 8, 2019 at his home. Tim was born July 13, 1936 and lived his entire life on the farm north of Charleston. The son of the late Thomas Paul Whalen and Nelle M. Harrington, Tim leaves behind his wife Kathy who he married in 2007, and who lovingly cared for him until his last breath.

Tim started school at the one room Mullins school house adjacent to his farm and graduated from Charleston High School in 1954 and Eastern Illinois University in 1959. He began farming with his father while still in school, was recognized as a Master Farmer in 1965, and continued this excellence throughout his life, farming land that has been in his family for 4 generations. Tim gave back to his community, serving years helping maintain the watershed, draining ditches, and keeping Seven Hickory roads plowed through the blizzards of ’77 and ’78. He was also treasurer for the Hickory-Morgan Volunteer Fire Department.

Tim’s older brother, Tommy Whalen and stepson, Michael Allen, preceded him. He also leaves behind his sister, Patricia Gorey (John) and her five children who spent summers on the farm with Uncle Tim and Mom-mom. Kathy Kuzma (Ron), Connie Cevasco (Dan), Mike Gorey (Susan), Pat Gorey, and Cindy Sunday (Art), and their 16 children and 9 grandchildren will miss him dearly. Tim also leaves behind a stepdaughter, Lisa Ward (Leon), 5 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great-grandchildren. Tim will be greatly missed by his right hand man, Shane Way, and many friends in the farming community who will miss his instigation of lively discussions at the Fairgrange and Charleston elevators.

Tim’s family would also like to thank Kay Wheeler, Karen Rose and Barb Hovis with Lincolnland Hospice for their wonderful and compassionate care.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Adams Funeral Chapel in Charleston with a Prayer Service beginning at 6:45 p.m. Tim’s Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, 2019 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 921 Madison Avenue in Charleston, where Tim was a lifelong member. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and left at the visitation/funeral mass or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL 61920.
