Michael Shonsey, a well known cattle feeder and farmer of Clarks died Thursday last week in a Council Bluffs hospital at 87 years of age. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church in Clarks Saturday with burial at Central City.

Mr. Shonsey was the last surviving participant in the famous Johnson County War at Kaycee, Wyoming in 1892.

The Johnson County war was the climatic chapter in the long drawn struggle between cattlemen and the settlers for possession of the land of the west.

Historians have not agreed on whether, as the settlers claimed, the cattlemen tried to wipe out the settlers because they were taking legal possession of the land and breaking it to the plow or whether the settlers, as the cattlemen said, were rustlers who made their living by preying on the herds of large cattle companies.

Wyoming cattlemen raised an "Army" to invade Johnson County and wipe out nesters. The cattlemen were cornered and only arrival of the United States Army troops saved them from annihilation.

Shonsey rode as a scout with the invaders, and it was he who carried the message that brought federal troops.

Shonsey came to Central City and later to Clarks and became a large scale cattle feeder. As a young cowhand he had won the world's steer roping championship three times.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Schuyler Masters of Omaha; a son, Mike Jr. of Clarks, six grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
