Richard Cannon, 80, of Evansville, passed away Sunday, June 9, 2019 at his home. He was born February 1, 1939 in Vincennes, IN to the late James and Alice (McCarty) Cannon.
Richard was a member of Christian Fellowship Church. He received his Bachelor’s in Pharmacy from Purdue University in 1961. Richard purchased Malott’s Drug Store on West Franklin Street which was renamed Cannon’s Family Pharmacy now Paul’s Pharmacy. In 1968 he cofounded Medco Centers, a chain of 24 nursing homes. He purchased the McCurdy Hotel which he renovated and converted into a residential retirement center in 1970. He developed Southern Care Company, a chain of 6 nursing homes in Texas before becoming a financial consultant at Merrill Lynch in 1984. He retired from Hilliard Lyons as Vice President in 2006. Richard developed the Brickyard Luxury Apartments on the west side. He was baptized by a childhood friend in 2000 and became very active in missionary work, making many trips to Honduras on medical teams. He volunteered at Impact Ministries, tutoring and working on the Dental Blitz Team. He taught Celebrate Recovery Inside at the Vanderburgh County Jail. He was Vanderburgh County and Indiana Chairman of American Cancer Society Crusades. He received Key to the City in Bowling Green KY in 1975 and served on the executive committee of the Purple Aces Club. Richard started the soccer program at Christ the King Grade School and help found the grade school soccer league. He cofounded the soccer program at Memorial High School and coached grade school basketball and Pepsi and Pizza Hut Soccer teams. He was Who’s Who in America in 1976, Who’s Who in Finance and Industry in 1978 and was awarded the Outstanding Man in America in 1971. He was an Honorary Kentucky Colonel.
Richard is survived by his wife, Linda; sons, Mark (Kirsten) Cannon of Indianapolis, IN, Dan (Susie) Cannon of St. Louis, MO, Scott (Erika) Cannon of Providence, RI; daughter, Amy (Brian) Cunningham of Columbus, IN; grandchildren, Corey Cannon, Sam Cannon (Fiancé Claire Elbert), Max Cannon, Jordan Cannon, Braeden Cannon, Zach, Ben and Teddy Cunningham, Evan Anders (Mackenzie), Ryan, and Grace Anders; great grandson, Noah Cunningham; Linda’s children, Beth (Bob) Burkart, Tim (Liza) Hartig, Scott (Carrie) Hartig and grandchildren, Ryan, Emily, and Matthew Burkart, Edward and Harrison Hartig.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Cannon.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 11, 2019 from 2:00-7:00 p.m. at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, 800 S. Hebron Ave., Evansville. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, 4100 Millersburg Rd, Evansville, IN 47725. Burial will be at Bethlehem United Church of Christ Cemetery.
