Gilman served with the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was an avid car racing fan and enjoyed working on cars with his sons. Gilman was especially proud of his Boxer dogs. He bred and finished many American Kennel Club champions: AKC Champion Budsobrav's Happy Days C.D. (Companion Dog), S.O.M. (Sire of Merit), who in one year won 12 best-in-shows. This was his proudest achievement as a breeder. Gilman was a member of the American Boxer Club, the Milwaukee Boxer Club, Coulee Kennel Club and Coulee Region Humane Society.
He is survived by his wife, Katherine Caroline (Thompson); children: Katherine (Jean Paul) Genoud, Gilman Andrew (Gayle) Aspenson, Michael Gordon (Mary) Aspenson and Rachel Marie Aspenson; grandchildren: Michael B. Aspenson, Christine Genoud, Jacqueline Genoud, Stephan Genoud, Jennifer Aspenson, Andrew Aspenson, Stephanie Fish, Christopher Fish and Katie Lyn Fish; four great-grandchildren; siblings: LaVerne (Bonnie) Aspenson, Betty (Stan) Breiwick and Howard (Pat) Aspenson.
Burial will be in Utica Cemetery, Utica Township, Crawford County, Wis.
