Accidently shot by 9y Norman Davenport who had purchased a 22 caliber rifle for 50 cents and was sitting in the grandstands at the fairgrounds shooting at things. He shot at Mr Sherwood's car and had no idea he had killed him until the next day.

"M. E. Sherwood, division master mechanic of the Michigan Central, at Jackson, Mich., was accidentally shot and killed at that place on June 4. His age was 46 years." (Railway Age Gazette, June 25, 1915)
