Jack Keith Sullivan

March 13, 1938 - February 25, 2018

Jack Sullivan, 79, passed away on February 25, 2018 peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. Jack was born March 13, 1938 in Yuma, CO to John Wesley and Velma Maxine (Everett) Sullivan.
Jack grew up on his grandfathers homestead farm in Eckley, CO and attended a country school with 3 students of which one was his sister. In the third grade, he began school in Eckley graduating from Yuma High School in 1957. His parents moved to Loveland in 1957 while he stayed in Yuma to ride bulls in the rodeo. After getting hurt later that year, he joined his parents in Loveland.
Jack was drafted into the Army on September 11, 1961 and honorably discharged on September 10, 1963.   He did his basic training in Fort Carson and spent his career at Fort Eustis, VA. His company was on the beaches of Florida and ready for duty during the Cuban Crisis. For a young farm boy from Eastern Colorado it was quite an experience to be in the south at that time.
After returning to Loveland from the service, Jack married Sue Moran. He adopted her two children, Ken and Christy.  Jack and Sue had two children, John Wesley and James Keith. They later divorced.
In 1970 Jack joined the Loveland Fire Department where he spent 17.5 years until retiring at age 50.  At that time it was an all volunteer organization with paid engineers for the stations. Jack served through the ranks and was Volunteer Fire Chief from 1984-87.  He was very proud of spearheading the construction of the Fire Department’s training center. After attending a fire school in Texas, Jack brought back the idea of a training center for Loveland. In 1973 a committee was formed and began working on it. On May 14, 1982, a dedication of the training area was dedicated. He enjoyed helping with the fire schools and training of the volunteers and running on the race team.   In retirement, Jack took interest in preserving the history of the department. In 2009 he recruited fellow retirees. They began collecting, cleaning and preserving the departments history and formed the Loveland Fire Exhibit Inc. organization.
Jack’s 47 year career in Earthwork, Asphalt Paving and Subdivision earth construction began as an equipment operator in Yuma, CO. He continued his career in Loveland with Loveland Excavating/Connell Resources, Coulson Excavating Co. and several other construction companies.  He was proud of the many projects he worked on including the first nine holes of Loveland Golf Course, Navaho Dam, West Eisenhower Tunnel, Fort Collins/Loveland Airport and countless streets, highways,  and subdivision earth construction in Loveland and surrounding communities. He retired in 2004.
In 1983 he married Pat Erbes. They would have celebrated their 35th anniversary in April. Jack accepted Pat’s two daughters, Kris and Wendy, and treated them as his own.
Jack and Pat enjoyed many years of traveling, camping, cruising, attending Broncos games, Super Bowls, and spending time with family and friends. He loved his Harleys.  In retirement, Jack began a hobby of etching on many mediums including glass, wood, gourds, mirrors, and gun stocks.
Jack was also a member of the Associated Veterans of Loveland and a 50 year member of Loveland Elks.
Jack is survived by his wife, Pat, daughters Kris (Shane) Ellis, Wendy Erbes both of Windsor, son James Sullivan of Nebraska, brother Kent (Pam) Sullivan of Loveland CO, sister Debi (Steve) Sekavec of Loveland CO, grandchildren Teran Boone, Hailey Boone, Jennifer Sullivan, Daniel Sullivan, Anthony Sullivan, one great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews, beloved dog Lady and grand-dogs Odin, Kizzie and Jasper.  He was preceded in death by his parents, infant son John Wesley, sister and brother in law Doris Heinrich and Leroy Heinrich, brother Brad Sullivan, adopted daughter Christy Moran and son Ken Sullivan.
The family would like to thank Caroline, Shelly and Casey and the rest of Pathways Hospice and Lynsay and staff of The Heart Clinic for the loving care.
Services will be held at First Christian Church on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.   Viewing will take place at the church prior to the service.
