William Leonard Worcester M.D was a physician and pathologist at the Danvers State (Insane) Hospital in Massachusetts. He died of accidentally infecting himself with tuberculosis during his lab work. While it was advised that he amputate the hand immediately he felt “he wanted to live a few years with both hands than more years with only one.” He died 10 days after infecting the finger and went calmly with all his affairs in order when he died.
W.L was the eldest of 9 children to Ezra and Ellen Worcester, Ezra a physician himself. W.L. Worcester attended Dartmouth College in 1869 and graduated second in his class. He traveled abroad for a few years for medical study and returned with an interest in the pathology of insanity. He became a physician at Michigan Asylum at Kalamazoo for 10 years before moving on to State Asylum at Little Rock, AR for six years. This experience got him the position of physician and pathologist at “Danver’s Insane Hospital in 1895”.
Not known for his warm first impressions, he was warm with those he knew. He also never married, his life devoted to his field of study. Further information on W.L. Worcester can be found in “The Annual Report of the Trustees of the Danvers State Hospital Vol. 24.
