Pfc. Larry Parks of Altoona, Pennsyvania graduated from Altoona High School. He enjoyed hunting, four wheeling, motorcycles and dirt drags. He was an active member of Newburg Volunteer Fire Department and was known for his dedication as a volunteer firefighter, something he had been doing eight years, beginning at age 16 after having hung around the station when he was younger. Larry watched over younger firefighters, and they in turn idolized him. He had such a reputation for adventure that he received the nickname "Tasmanian Devil," after the cartoon character that moves at breakneck speeds. He enjoyed working on cars, especially Chevrolets. Larry enlisted in the Army in January 2006 as a tank gunner and was assigned to Fort Stewart. He received a Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Action Badge. Larry was killed by small-arms fire in Baghdad at age 24.
