“Fran” or “Jackie,” as she was known by family, close friends and West Virginia neighbors, loved people and tried to always maintain a smile or encouraging word and never met a stranger. She also became a caregiver of sorts by accompanying neighbors to doctor appointments, shopping for them or just being there to meet their needs.
Frances spent her early life growing up in Bluefield, W.Va. After her parents died early in her life, she was raised by Gertrude and I.P. Ross who took the entire Mathews family under their wing and dearly loved them. She graduated from Genoa-Park Central High School and attended Bluefield State College completing her junior year. She moved to Manhattan, N.Y. in 1955 where she worked for Macy’s Department Store and retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Immigration and Naturalization. She moved to Maryland in 1996 to live with her daughter. Frances was raised in a Christian home and early in life accepted Christ and joined John Stewart United Methodist Church and sang in the choir. After moving to New York she attended Salem United Methodist Church. Since moving to Maryland, she was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, Lanham, Md., Pastor, the Reverend Mark D. Venson.
Frances was preceded in death by her mother, father, sister and two brothers.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted, loving daughter, Letitia (Tish) Ross; two sisters, Arnita Murray (Eddie), Bronx, N.Y., and Sister Max (Maryjane/Dollbaby), Katmandu, Nepal; two loving sisters-in-law, Emma Mathews (Arthur-Hot Shot), Fairmont, N.C., and Lenore Mathews (Clifton-CD), Milwaukee, Wis.; nieces, nephews and cousins who dearly loved “Aunt Fran;” loving neighbors and friends; two god-daughters, Brenda Russell, California and Brenda Williams, N.J.; and sister friends, Cinnamon Sharpe, California, Gladys Pannell, Ohio, Cornelia Fields, New York, Marlene Patterson, Washington, D.C., and Gwen Jackson, Pennsylvania; and brother friend, Rogers Alexander, Maryland, Beatrice McDay, Maryjane Smith and Bertie Myers and other loving relatives and friends.
