"John Richard Whelan, 87, of Flaherty, KY passed away Saturday, June 8, 2019 at his residence.

Mr. Whelan was a member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Flaherty, KY where he served as a deacon for 32 years. He was also retired from Olin Chemical Plant, Brandenburg, KY and was a veteran of the United States Army having served in the Korean War.

Mr. Whelan was preceded in death by his parents, John K. & Hattie Ellen Whelan; three brothers, Bertrand Whelan, Marcel Whelan, George Philip Whelan; a granddaughter, Vannah Rose Morgan.

Survivors include:
His wife of sixty five years, Barbara Pike Whelan of Flaherty, KY; five children, Tim Whelan & his wife, Sherry of Louisville, KY, Chris Whelan & his wife, Janice of Flaherty, KY, Ellen Jones & her husband, Kenny of Flaherty, KY, Kateri Whelan of Flaherty, KY, Mary Richard Brangers & her husband, Michael of Flaherty, KY; eleven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren with two on the way; three brothers, Mike Whelan of Louisville, KY, Paul Martin Whelan & his wife, Dee of Tampa, FL, Forrest Whelan & his wife, Beth of Scottsville, KY; one sister, Mary Ellen Williams & her husband, Freddy of St. John, KY; and a host of family & friends.

Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Monday and from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM Tuesday at the Chism Family Funeral Home, Vine Grove, KY.

A prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM Monday at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Whelan will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, Flaherty, KY. Burial will follow in the St. Martin Cemetery, Flaherty, KY.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 440 St. Martin Rd., Vine Grove, KY 40175 or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude PL, Memphis, TN 38105-9959"
