Son of Henry and Isabella (née Kenrick) Huxford of Portland Street, Walworth, London Borough of Southwark.

On 3rd August 1912 a party of boys and adults from the 2nd Walworth Boy Scout troop set off on a trip down the River Thames. On the following day, as they approached Leysdown, near Sheerness, Isle of Sheppey, their boat capsized in a sudden and violent storm and despite rescue attempts, 9 boys drowned. Amidst widespread public grief at the tragedy, the then First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill, arranged for their bodies to be brought up the Thames by the destroyer Fervent on 8th August 1912. Their procession to the cemetery and burial on 10th August attracted huge crowds.

Gravesite Details

The original memorial incorporated a life-size bronze statue of a Scout, but this was stolen in 1969.
