Dr. Whitman Dies at Ripe Old Age
For Four Score and One Years He Lived, Doing Good and Alleviating Suffering

All Beaufort was saddened by the death of Dr. J.A. Whitman, which occurred about 8 o'clock Wednesday morning. While Dr. Whitman has been in bad health for some time, yet his death was a distinct shock. It is hard to realize that this genial, lovable man has gone.
Dr. Whitman had rounded out four score and one years at the time of his death. He was a native of the State of Maine, emigrating south in 1873 and settling in Beaufort. In his younger days Dr. Whitman took an active part in municipal politics, being a number of terms town warden and [for man]y years chief of the fire department. Dr. Whitman was long a —[ prac]ticing physician. Dr. Whitman was a Mason of high _____ was a Knight Templar, _____est of the Masonic Order and also an active member of Raboni Chapter, No. 44. Many a silent tear was shed by his fellow craftsmen over his bier.
Dr. Whitman's wife died five years ago. Just a year before her death they celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. He leaves only one child, Mrs. Bristol, wife of Mr. W.R. Bristol, of this town. The only other remaining relative is a brother, Prof. P.M. Whitman of Augusta, Ga.
The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at Dr. Whitman's home by Rev. Mr. Clift, rector of St. Helena's Episcopal Church. Dr. Whitman's remains were buried in the Baptist churchyard with all the ritualistic solemnity of the Masonic order. Many and beautiful were the floral tributes placed upon his grave.
The pallbearers were: Active, Messrs T.H. Harms, C.K. Batchelder, C.E. Danner, J.A. Kinghorn, and .S. Claghorn; honorary, Messrs. F.W. Scheper, J.M. Crofut, Benj. Burr, Geo. Holmes, S.H. Rodgers, G.T. Ricker, and J.B. Kinghorn.

Death of Dr. J.A. Whitman
Dr. J.A. Whitman, a long resident of Beaufort, died Wednesday morning at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. W.R. Bristol, after a lingering illness of several months. After funeral services at the residence yesterday afternoon by Rev. T.G.W. Clift, the burial services were conducted according to Masonic rites and the body laid to rest in the Baptist church yard. The pall bearers were as follows - Honorary - George Holmes, S.H. Rodgers, F.W. Scheper, J.M. Crofut, Benjamin Burr, J.B. Kinghorn and George F. Ricker. Active - Chas. E. Danner, J.S. Claghorn, N. Christensen, Thos. Harms, C.K. Batchelder, and H.T. Danner.
Dr. Whitman is survived by one daughter, Mrs. W.R. Bristol of this city, and a brother, Prof. P.M. Whitman of Augusta.
Dr. Whitman came south in 1875 and for a number of years practiced medicine in Beaufort. He was a native of Maine, and at the time of his death was about 81 years old. He was a Mason of high rank, being a knight templar and past high priest of Rabboni Chapter, No. 44.
