Wife of Ephraim Mantle and Ancel Hatch.
Killed by a Horse
Early Sunday afternoon a shocking accident occurred here which cost Phebe N. Hatch's life. It appears her buggy horse was lame and she was in the act of bathing the affected foot or leg when the animal became frightened knocking her to the ground and when her son Ephraim who was in another part of the corral came to her rescue in response to her screams he found the horse standing with his hind feet upon his dying mother's breast and with its fore feet in the manger.
By the time the young man got the body out of the stable life was extinct. He too received such severe injuries that lie had to be carried into and out of the meeting house the day of the funeral. The horse seemed perfectly crazy after that, when turned out into the pasture he ran into a water trough nearly drowning and later one of the boys took it down in the field and shot it.
The deceased lady was forty-five years of age and the wife of the late Ansel Hatch who was also kicked by a horse which ultimately resulted in his death. This occurred about ten years ago. Her first husband, Ephraim Mantel, brother of United States Senator Lee Mantel of Montana was also killed. He was keeping a boarding house in Montana at the time when late one night a man called and wanted him to get up and get him some supper on refusing to comply with the strangers wishes he shot him.
Mrs. Hatch was highly respected by all who knew her and a very independent and courageous woman. She had five children, two of whom were by Mr. Mantel. She was a daughter of the late William Brown.
The funeral services were held in the South Bountiful meeting house on Wednesday.
