Cartoonist. Hugely popular creator of the comic strip "Little Nemo in Slumberland." In 1909 he began to draw cartoons for animated movies, releasing "Little Nemo" in 1911, "How a Mosquito Operates" in 1912 and "Gertie, The Trained Dinosaur", his most famous movie containing 10,000 separate drawings, in 1914. In 1917 he released "The Sinking of the Lusitania", containing 25,000 separate drawing - the first feature-length animated cartoon. While a handful of very primative animated films preceeded his, historians agree that McCay invented the medium.
