Joseph Walter Stone, “Joe” was born in Birmingham, Alabama to Earl Leonard Stone (1905-1980) and Mary Agnes Creedon Stone (1905-1944) on February 21, 1925 and passed away at his home in Birmingham on June 5, 2019 at the age of 94.
"Paw Paw Roll Tide" was a wonderful and devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved his family very much and he will be greatly missed. Joe graduated from Woodlawn Grammer School, Woodlawn High School, and the University of Alabama.
Like nearly all Woodlawn boys in the early 1940’s, Joe wanted to serve in the military following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. By graduation day, Joe (already eighteen) had enlisted into the U.S. Navy. He left on a night train the same day that he graduated from Woodlawn High School, headed for Pensacola and U.S. Navy “Boot Camp”.
In the Navy, Joe was assigned to Naval Aviation at NAS Pensacola, and Saufley Field. While in Pensacola, he suffered injuries in 1944 that would eventually end his military service on July 4, 1945, after a year of convalescence at NAS Pensacola.
After being discharged from the Navy, Joe attended the University of Alabama where he met his future wife, Marie “DeDe” Butler.
Joe retired from his job as a Criminal Investigator (Special Agent) after more than 25 years with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and spent most of his retirement years with his family at their lake house on Logan Martin Lake. Joe was a member of “The Club”, Alabama Peace Officers Association (Past President), Crestwood Civic Club (Past President), and Model “A” Ford Restorer’s Club. He served as the President of the Federal Employees Credit Union in Birmingham for more than 25 years.
Joe is survived by DeDe, his wife of 71 years, brother, Robert Creedon Stone, son Ronny (Brenda); daughter, Dyxie Pauly (Clarke); grandson, Joe Stone (Malea), their children, Madi, Hannah, Joseph, and Chloe; granddaughter Leigh Ann DeLaney (Brooks), their children, Lily, Jackson, and Mack; grandson, Cary Stone, and his son Trent; granddaughter, Brook Pittenger (Mike), and their children Ella and James; and Great-Great Granddaughter Nova Owens.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Ridout’s Trussville Chapel with visitation from 9:30 AM until service time beginning at 11 AM. The U.S. Navy Honors will be celebrated at the chapel services before leaving for burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.
