Ludwig F. Backes was born January 25, 1908 at Langenburg, Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of John and Mary (Gellner) Backes. He attended school in the Dresden area. He was united in marriage to Elsie Ring on January 22, 1935 at Langdon. He worked with the WPA and later farmed. He was the owner of the Backes Grocery and Locker in Osnabrock until his retirement in 1974.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Wayne, William and Kurtis; six daughters, Marlene Stremick, Jeanette Wedwick, Lenore Newland, Jolene Eudy, Marilyn Smith and Jo Mary Fischer. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Dennis; four brothers, John, Joseph, infant Joseph and Bernard, and five sisters, Elizabeth, Eleanor, Agnes, Margaret and Rosalie.
