WAUKESHA - Eugene “Gene” R. Kraus of Waukesha, surrounded by his family, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at the age of 87 years.

Gene was born on March 17, 1922, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Kraus. He was a longtime member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served as a Sunday school superintendent. Gene was employed by International Harvester for over 40 years and active in the United Steel Workers of America Local 3740 union. He was known for his involvement in the community as he served on the Waukesha County Board for 20 years. He was also an appointed Waukesha alderman. Gene actively worked on the city panels on the appeal board, was appointed to the common council and to the sign review boards. In 2005 Gene was presented a key to the city for diligently serving on city boards and commissions for 46 years.

Gene enjoyed woodworking, photography, and his five beautiful daughters. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marian; his five daughters and their families, including 14 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Ruth Flath, Ruby Kraus and Yvonne Flath. Eugene is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elvira Streich; parents; brothers, Wallace and Harold; and sisters, Leona and Isabel.

A funeral service for Gene was held Thursday at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waukesha, with the Rev. Jim Holmberg officiating. The Cesarz, Charapata & Zinnecker Funeral Home assisted the family.
