Author. Beloved baker, bestselling author, and member of the James Beard Cookbook Hall of Fame, Heatter published numerous cookbooks that showcased her love of pastries and desserts with meticulous details and precise instructions. She first captured the attention of New York Times food editor Craig Claiborne who wrote an article about Heatter and her husband's Florida restaurant 'Inside'. Claiborne encouraged her to write a cookbook. 'Maida Heatter's Book of Great Desserts' was published in 1974 and she would go on to publish more bestsellers including "Madia Heatter's Book of Great Chocolate Desserts" which won the James Beard Foundation Award in 1981. Her last book "Happiness is Baking," a compilation of her best known recipes, was published two months before her death. Before beginning her career in baking, she studied fashion design at the Pratt institute and worked as a fashion illustrator and jewelry designer. She was the daughter of Gabriel Heatter, a well-known radio commentator.
