Ellen Golden Grissam Thompson passed from this earth to eternity on June 4, 2019. Interment at the Duncan Municipal Cemetery.
Ellen was born on May 6, 1934 in Winthrop, Arkansas, to Joseph William and Iva Lee Grissam. She moved at a young age to Duncan, Oklahoma, where she grew up. Ellen attended Duncan High School.
Ellen is survived by her husband, Roy C. Thompson. Roy and Ellen were married June 13, 1953 in Sapulpa, Oklahoma. They would have celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary on June 13, 2019.
Ellen is also survived by her daughter, Diana Faust (and her spouse, Dave), her sons David Thompson (and wife, Carol) and Richard Thompson, as well as her grandchildren Joshua Merritt, Danielle Thompson Watts, Jonathan Thompson, Stephen Thompson, and Katie Thompson, and great-grandchildren, Victoria Merritt, Aaro Merritt, and Easton Watts. She is also survived by sister, Joann Grissam Punneo, and brother William Grissam.
Ellen was predeceased by her daughter, Marilyn Jan Withrow (1955-2016); her parents; brothers, John, Ernest, Harrell and Carroll Grissam, and George, Tom, and Charlie Thomas; and sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, and Enos Grissam, and Geneva Olly and Cora Williamson.
Ellen’s talents were many. Taught fine sewing skills by her mother, Ellen continued to hone her skills, sewing exquisite gowns, dresses, and coats for herself, her daughters, and others for many years. Ellen also had a love of painting and drawing. Without any formal training or schooling, her drawings captured landscapes and faces beautifully and she humored her children and grandchildren with whimsical cartoons. Ellen’s skill could transform a lined and weathered face into a masterpiece of experience and wisdom. Her subjects came from all walks of life.
As an artist, Ellen also spent many hours teaching special needs children painting classes at the Huntington Museum of Art in Huntington, West Virginia. Her talent and love of teaching art was recognized by local artists and journalists alike, as she was named the Artist in Residence at the local gallery in Ashland, Kentucky. Eventually, Ellen’s love of art naturally led to a passion for photography.
