CRAIG I. MASON, 46 - COACH, GOP WORKER

July 8, 1996 | Syracuse Herald-Journal (NY)

When Craig I. Mason collapsed during a Little League game two weeks ago, he was doing one of the things he loved most: spending time with his daughter.

"Craig's world revolved around Lauren. The sun rose and set on her," said Mr. Mason's mother, Susie Mason.

Mr. Mason, 46, of Van Mara Drive, North Syracuse, was a single parent who had shared joint custody of his 11-year-old daughter for six years. On June 20, he was coaching a division playoff game for her softball team in the North Syracuse Kiwanis Little League.

"Lauren got a two-base hit and stole third. She glanced over at her dad and he smiled and gave her a thumbs-up. Then he collapsed," his mother said.

Doctors said a blood clot blocked an artery leading to Mr. Mason's heart. He remained in a coma until his death Saturday at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center.

A life resident of the North Syracuse area, Mr. Mason graduated in 1967 from North Syracuse High School.

He went to work in his father's company, F.F.M. Heating & Air Conditioning of North Syracuse. When his father, Floyd, died six years ago, Mr. Mason took over the business.

He was a member of Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church in North Syracuse. He was a member and past president of the North Syracuse Kiwanis Club and the North Syracuse Chamber of Commerce.

For more than 20 years, he belonged to the North Syracuse Republican Committee, serving as its vice chairman when he died.

"I think he held every position there is," said North Syracuse Mayor Jim Hotchkiss, a friend and second cousin of Mr. Mason. "Craig would always do anything that needed to be done, whether it was spearheading fund-raisers, organizing petition drives, putting up signs or taking them down."

Most of all, he enjoyed the time he shared with Lauren, cheering on her team, teaching her to use power tools or swimming laps at Kennedy Park pool in North Syracuse.

A celebration of his life on Tuesday will include the hymn, "How Great Thou Art."

"Craig must have known that he wasn't going to be here for a long time because he piled so much good into such a short life," his mother said.

Surviving are a daughter, Lauren of North Syracuse; his mother, Auriel "Susie" Mason of North Syracuse; a brother, Andrew J. of Hamilton; and a nephew.

Services are 7 p.m. Tuesday at Andrews Memorial United Methodist Church.

There are no calling hours. The family will greet friends in the church's Stoeckel Hall after the services.

Contributions may be made to the Lauren Mason Educational Fund or the North Syracuse Kiwanis Little League.

Sears-Middleton Funeral Home has arrangements.
