Capt. Steele of North Henderson, Illinois grew up on a farm near North Henderson and transferred out of Alexis High School before graduating, leaving for a military academy in Missouri where he was commissioned as an Army officer. He graduated from the academy in 1998 with honors, excelling in English, French, physics and pre-calculus. As a young boy, Josh began a life-long love of studying rocks. That passion led to his bachelor of science degree in geological engineering in 2002 from the University of Missouri-Rolla graduating magna cum laude. As a high school student, Capt. Steele was interested in the military and also a straight-A pupil. He was also involved in extracurricular activities on the speech team and played football. Although he was often quiet, when he spoke everyone remembered what he said. He was quick-witted, straightforward and very honest. Because of his passion, hard work, creativity, intensity and perfectionism, he was able to accomplish anything he set his mind to do. His brother, Stephen, is a senior master sergeant in the United States Air Force and his sister Lucinda is a first lieutenant in the United States Army. He was protective of those he cared about, including his country, his family and especially his little sister. Joshua was preceded in death by grandparents: Paul and Dixie Weir and one nephew: Jason Steele. He was 26.
