George was born in Flensburg, MN, to Joseph P. and Antonia C. (Prozinski) Hamernick. He attended District 63 grade school in Flensburg and graduated from Little Falls High School in 1940 at the age of 16.
He moved to Minneapolis and began working as a Flight Dispatcher for Northwest Airlines. He enlisted in the Army/Air Force in 1942 and worked with the 8th Weather Squadron.
In 1947, George married Betty Mae Derosier at Holy Family Church in Belle Prairie, MN. Betty died in the fall of 1999. George retired from Northwest in 1989 after a 47 year career. During his employment he worked in Shemya, Alaska, Long Island, New York, Tokyo, Japan, Anchorage, Alaska, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota.
He loved adventure, and after retirement he spent a lot of his time traveling around the world. During the summer months, he spent most of his time at his cabin on Green Prairie Fish Lake in Little Falls. He had many hobbies which included genealogy, stamp collecting, playing cards, and mostly looking for something to fix. He loved to repair things and could fix anything.
George is survived by his children Gail (Glenn) Korfhage, Donna (Ralph) Gutierrez, Mary (Steve) Heggernes, Patty (Dan) Kunko, Joe (Janet), Anthony; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Bernie Hamernick and Cookie Derosier; and special friend Helen LeBlanc Hamrick and her family.
