James Leroy Landes was a son of Christian Landes (son of Samuel Landes and Elizabeth Sheets) and Nancy Rebecca Craun (daughter of John Frederick Craun, Jr. and Sarah Fleshman), who had migrated to Missouri from Augusta County, Virginia. They had first tried Paris, Edgar, Illinois. James Leroy was their first child born in Missouri, and they always referred to him as "Little Jimmy". He was only five when he died.

In the 1870 census his middle initial was stated to be "W". He may have had two middle names or whoever was talking to the census taker may have just made a mistake.
