Son of Oscar and Minnie Baggett Bruney; husband of Sally Ann Bellinger.
He retired from military service in 1960, having spent 21 years in the United States Army. He fought in the European Theater in World War II, fighting in Holland, Belgium, France and Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star with four oak leaf clusters for bravery under fire. He also held the Army Occupation Medal, Paratrooper wings with the 82nd Airbourne Division, Combat Badge and he received the Army Commendation Medal three times. He earned the ranks of expert in both machine guns and marksmanship. Jim was also awarded the Good Conduct Medal. During World War II, he fought in the Battle of the Bulge with the "Big Red One" and the 30th Infantry Division. He was Command Sgt. Major of Div. Trns. with the 3rd Armored Division in Hanau, Germany. Also, Jim was Command Sgt. Major at Ft. Sill, Okla., where he retired in 1960.
