Marshall Walker Wellman, b. at Brookline, 25 March 1846; enlisted in the Eighth Vermont Regiment at the age of 16 yrs. in 1862; went in the expedition to Ship Island; thence to New Orleans.
He was the first man shot in the regiment, in a skirmish near Bisland, on the Opelousas Railroad, 22 June 1862, ae. 16 yrs., 2 mos., 27 days.; buried in the Soldiers' Cemetery near New Orleans, La. A cenotaph was erected to his memory in the family lot in Brookline, Vt.
