Immigrated to the United States from Prussia in 1852. Became naturalized citizen in 1860.

Married Hannah Specht in 1855. They had eight children together.

During the Civil War he served in the 15th Ohio Infantry Companies B and G, and then the US Army 1st Veteran Engineers.
