Joseph was born on September 28, 1879 in the village of Bednarka, which at the time was under the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and in what is now Southern Poland.
He was the son of Joannas (John, as listed on later records) Popowczak and Anna Zynski. Jospeh was the youngest of 5 siblings; Anastasia Popivchak (Pavliszyer / Pauliczak / Paulizak), Irene Popivchak (Szewczyk / Scheftic / Sheftic), Andrew, Michael and Joseph.
Immigrated to the United States on January 31, 1899. Became a Merchant, first in Iselin, Pennsylvania, and ultimately settled in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Oryna, and family of 9 surviving children. Died on January 16, 1929, of Pneumonia.
