Dorothy Imogene Powers, age 87, Unicoi, passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She is a daughter of the late James M. and Virgie E. Duke Carter. Dorothy was a native of Detroit, AL before moving to Unicoi County in 1969.

She was a very active member of Unicoi Church of God. She served in many ways including the Meals on Wheels and Food Box ministry. Dorothy enjoyed the annual church apple butter making for the Apple Festival.

She retired from Texas Instruments in 1992. Dorothy enjoyed gardening and tending to her beautiful flowers. She also loved to bowl.

Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, McAlester Benson Powers on December 28, 2007; two grandsons: James Lucas, Jr. and Justin Vance; son-in-law, David Winters.

Dorothy leaves behind to cherish her memory, two sons: Terry Powers (Diane), Keith Powers (Tracy), all of Unicoi; four daughters: Brenda Diane Szmansky (Marc), Adrian, MI, Janice Winters, Erwin, Marie Denney (Jack), Unicoi and Jamie E. Culbertson (Jerry), Thompson, OH; one sister, Neva Raper, Sherwood, AR; ten grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 2, 2019 in the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Ronnie Holloway and Reverend Eddie Blazer will officiate at the 7:00 P.M. funeral service. Music will be provided by Inez Chandler. Committal will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason Vance, Ryan Powers, Kevin Powers, Ronnie Shelton, James Powers and Donald Lee Powers. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 P.M. on Monday.
