Roger William Powers, Jr., was born on January 8, 1927 in Bryan, Texas to Roger William Powers and Annie Ruth Dowling Powers. He passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 in Hearne, Texas at the age of 92 years.
Roger attended and graduated from Stephen Austin High School and attended Texas A&M until he was drafted into the Army just a WWII was winding down so he spent his service at Ft. Dix New Jersey helping to process the records of returning service men from overseas.
After his service in the military, he attended and graduated from Feather and Feather School of design in Houston, Texas with a degree in Interior Architecture and Interior Design. He did post graduate work at Parsons School of Design in New York. He worked in interior decorating until he developed a passion for photography and was hired by the Houston Post Newspaper where he worked for 20 years. During his time at the Post, he won two prestigious awards. He won the J.C. Penny-University of Missouri Award, 1967, with a story telling picture and in 1975 he won the annual Headliners Club, Austin, Texas 1st place in Feature News Photography. During his years at the Post, he photographed many famous people and many historical events.
During his years in Houston, he sang with the Houston Choral and Houston Symphony Orchestra and he also used his creative talents by buying and restoring many old houses which he called recycling. Several of his restorations were written up and published by the Post. After his retirement he moved to Hearne, Texas and worked at the Texas A&M University Photographic Services Department.
He restored and built houses in the Hearne area and then moved to Calvert, Texas where he restored a historical building downtown and a historical home in the residential area. He also dealt in antiques and truly enjoyed being in the malls there.
Roger was a devoted and loving son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister, Betty Powers Mitchell; brother-in-law, Johnnie Mack Mitchell; nephew, Dr. John Mitchell of Marietta, Ok; niece, Michelle Mitchell Petersen and husband Ron of Keller, TX; one great-niece, five great-nephews and four great-great-nieces & nephews; special friends, David Hunter, Almera McCauslin and Pam Conrad.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 3:00 P.M. at the Bryan City Cemetery.
