Crystal's Obituary

Crystal Gadberry, 92, of Powersville, MO, passed away at the Wayne County Hospital in Corydon, IA, on Saturday, May 25, 2019. She had been in failing health the past two years.

Crystal L. (Gatrel) Gadberry was born at her parents’ home in Powersville, MO, on January 3, 1927, the daughter of James and Anna Maude (Leighton) Gatrel, who preceded her in death. Crystal was raised in Powersville and graduated from Powersville High School in 1945. She married Jessie Howard Gadberry in 1952 and he preceded her in death.

Crystal was a hard worker her entire life. She worked in Central office in Powersville for four years and then worked with Woolworth in Des Moines. She also worked at a laundry and then moved to Chillicothe, MO, to work in a glove factory. But Crystal returned to Powersville and lived there most of her life. She was the telephone operator and then owned and operated the Powersville store with her husband. She later worked for Earl Cole at the store which is still in operation in Powersville.

Crystal loved to dance. She also loved to crochet and cook, but her greatest joy was socializing with the people of Powersville and letting her store serve as a community center for the village.

Crystal is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is also survived by the people of Powersville who considered her a local treasure.

Crystal was preceded in death by siblings Dudley Gatrel, Hartley Gatrel, Florence Fleder, and Francis Beecher Gatrel. She was also preceded in death by her friend of 40 years, Earl Cole.
