Elizabeth Hillesland, 79, of Jamestown, ND, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2019, at the Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

Elizabeth Diane Hillesland, the daughter of Cecil Joseph Roth, Sr., and Maude Elizabeth Roth, was born on February 15, 1940, at General Hospital in Devils Lake, North Dakota.  She graduated from Jamestown High School in 1958.  On September 26, 1958, Elizabeth married Marlyn Earl Hillesland, originally of Kloten, North Dakota.

The couple resided in Grand Forks, North Dakota; Montrose, California; Jamestown; and Park Rapids, Minnesota, and vicinity. In Jamestown Elizabeth maintained an impeccable home where the couple hosted renters for many years. For 19 years they lived in this historic home built by Judge Glaspell in 1883. Afterwards, the Hilleslands lived for twelve years in the Park Rapids area and were involved in cabin restoration.  In retirement they returned to Jamestown in 2000.

Elizabeth created many splendid art works using oil paints and many media, but usually depicting themes from nature or rural and rustic life.  Her covered bridge paintings are nostalgically reminiscent of a past era.  Her command of envisioning landscapes on canvas helps calm the soul of the viewer. In her compositions she could represent many a delicate flower or alert bird, as well as alternately evoke a placid country scene, perhaps with a John Deere tractor or a rickety barn. With simple, but accurate strokes of the paint brush she brought art into the lives of family, friends, and those who would wish to purchase her works for the token sum she would ask.  The couple spent nine years participating in Mary’s House of Crafts. Her painting was a God-given talent, as she never had an art lesson, but she definitely loved to see and appreciate others’ compositions in art. She was a life-long learner.

Elizabeth and Marlyn and their children enjoyed being in nature, too.  The couple not only loved living in the many lakeside cabins they worked on, but also in the early years taking the family camping, fishing, and celebrating life around a cozy evening campfire along a North Dakota riverbank or in the Minnesota woods.  In later years they loved being with their grandchildren, too, and there was always fun when the extended family could come together and fellowship by the flickering campfire light.

Elizabeth is survived by their three children, Calvin (Jackie) Hillesland, Barbara (Allan) Martin and Michael (Bethany) Hillesland; eleven grandchildren; three siblings, Barbara Berg, Cecil (Maria) Roth, Jr., Jennifer (Dwight) Roberts; sisters-in-law Audrey Sundquist and Frieda Hillesland; and many nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law, Charles and Ellen (Lavanger) Hillesland; brother-in-law, Ellwood; sister-in-law, Evelyn Hillesland; brothers-in-law, John Sundquist and Richard Berg, Sr., and her beloved husband, Marlyn, whom she missed dearly after his death on December 31, 2017.

Liz led her life always faithful to God, husband, and family, as she led by example, which was a calling in life. She was a kind soul, with a ready smile and a serenity becoming of a loving daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother.   We will miss her.
