Cheryl grew up in Mishawaka, Indiana, the oldest of seven children in a Roman Catholic family. She had four younger brothers and two younger sisters. She went to grade school at St. Joseph's before high school at Mishawaka High. She graduated with the high school Class of 1969. She did her university work at Indiana University (Bloomington), graduating with a bachelor's in elementary education. She taught for 28 years in the Penn-Harris-Madison school system, retiring in 2013. She first taught at Walt Disney Elementary and then at Schmucker Middle School, where she taught language arts and social studies.

Cheryl was survived by her husband, her daughter, her son, three grandchildren, two sisters, and three brothers. Her brother Patrick died in 2010.
