Major Edwin Ripley Richardson was the son of Ann Maria Davis Richardson and William S. Richardson a prominent lawyer of Athens, Alabama.
Brother to Nicholas Davis (1832), Samuel H. (1837), William J. (1839), Anne (1843), and James Benagh Richardson (1847).
Major Edwin R. Richardson entered the Civil War on behalf of the Confederate States and served thoughout the war with bravery and distinction. At the conclusion of the War, he moved to Nashville where he entered the mercantile business with Fite, Anderson, and Green, wholesale dry goods merchants. He remained with the, until he with others, organized the wholesale shoe firm of Richardson, Carter, and Mason, in which firm and its successions, he was engaged until his death.
Major Richardson married Susan Hamilton of Nashville and they made their home at 113 Sixteenth Avenue South. To this union seven children were born, Leonora Richardson Baxter, Mortimer Hamilton Richardson, Susan Hamilton Richardson Warner, Mary Richardson Frost, Edna Richardson Howe, Ann Davis Richardson Caldwell, and Joseph Hamilton Richardson.
