Charles Mondak Seel
MALTA - Funeral services for Charles Mondak Seel, 67, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Little White Church, conducted by the Rev. Leonard Bergstrom. Burial will be at Malta Cemetery.

Mr. Seel died Tuesday while he was at work at the Pastime Bar.

Mr. Seel was born Nov. 11, 1903, at Mondak, the son of Jacob and Barbara Seel. He was the first white child born there after the town was organized. Seel attended schools at Mondak and Bainville and then farmed at Ft. Buford, N.D., until 1938 when he came to Montana. He operated bars and night clubs at Whitefish, Hamilton, Hardin and Malta.

He married Velma Newell in Kalispell on March 3, 1942.

Survivors include the widow; two sons, Elmer and Gene, of Malta; two step-sons, Willis V. Schlegel of Bethany, Okla., and Willard Schlegel of Elgin, Ore.; three step-daughters, Mrs. Clyde Cobb of Belle Fourche, S.D., Shirley Whitney of Lewistown, and Mrs. Betty Jones of Encino, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Rose Hockenberry of Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, William F. Seel of Havre, George J. Seel of Woodburn, Ore., and Otto F. Seel of Williston, N.D.; and two grandchildren.

1. Mondak, Montana is a ghost town in Roosevelt County, which flourished c. 1903-1919, in large measure by selling alcohol to residents of North Dakota, then a dry state. His father, Jacob, owned the land upon which Mondak was established. It was called the "Toughest Little Town in the West", in addition to providing liquor, it be was home to many gamblers.
